WASHINGTON, September 24, 2020 – The American Petroleum Institute (API) released the following statement in response to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order banning the sale of new gasoline and diesel-powered passenger cars in the state by 2035.

“This is a profoundly counterproductive plan that will deny hardworking Californians the choice to buy a car that suits their needs and budget," API Senior Vice President of Policy, Economics and Regulatory Affairs Frank Macchiarola said. "The solutions to today’s challenges will not be born out of rhetoric-laden bans like this but rather the product of innovation and thoughtful policymaking. What we saw from the governor today is merely a plan to increase the cost of living in California.”
