Mike Sommers is the 15th chief executive of the American Petroleum Institute (API), the largest trade association representing all segments of America's oil and natural gas industry.
Since joining API in July 2018, Sommers has led the organization through periods of dynamic global energy markets and significant political transitions in Washington and state capitals across the country. Under his leadership, API has advanced a strategic plan and core principles that guide the organization’s integrated advocacy and industry leadership today. Internationally, he has expanded the reach and visibility of API’s standards and safety programs, strengthening their value to the industry.
As a national spokesperson for America’s oil and natural gas industry, Sommers is frequently featured in national and trade media on energy policy, economic growth and U.S. competitiveness.
Before joining API, Sommers led the American Investment Council, representing the nation's leading private equity and growth capital firms. He previously held leadership roles in the U.S. House of Representatives and at the White House, including as Chief of Staff for Speaker of the House John A. Boehner and as Special Assistant to President George W. Bush at the National Economic Council.
Sommers is a native of Naperville, Ill., and a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is married to Jill Sommers, a former Commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). They live in Alexandria, Virginia and have three adult children.
