API Urges Action on Permitting Reform Ahead of State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, February 24, 2026 — The American Petroleum Institute (API) today released the following statement from President and CEO Mike Sommers ahead of President Trump’s State of the Union address.

“As the President and Congress gather for the State of the Union, American oil and natural gas production is at record levels, and energy is critical to affordability and economic growth. That strength reflects meaningful policy progress to restore responsible leasing, support consumer choice, advance LNG exports and maintain a competitive tax code that drives investment here at home. With demand for affordable, reliable energy rising, the challenge before us is not supply but the infrastructure to deliver it — America must build, and Congress must unite around bipartisan permitting reform to get it done.”

API has advocated for durable, bipartisan permitting reform that includes reforms to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Clean Water Act, and the judicial review process. For more information, view API’s Policy Roadmap for permitting reform.

The API represents all segments of America’s oil and natural gas industry, supporting nearly 11 million U.S. jobs. With approximately 600 members, API companies produce, process and distribute the majority of the nation’s energy. Founded in 1919, API has developed over 800 standards to enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Learn more at API.org.
