Access & Production

America’s energy leadership is built on access—the ability to explore, develop and produce the resources that power our economy, strengthen national security, and support millions of U.S. jobs. From onshore shale formations to offshore deepwater fields, responsible development of our nation’s oil and natural gas resources drives innovation, investment, and opportunity in every corner of the country.

  • Onshore: Onshore oil and gas development on federal and private lands is a cornerstone of U.S. energy production. Spanning shale formations, tight oil plays, and conventional wells, onshore production fuels homes, businesses, and transportation while supporting millions of American jobs. Technological advancements, including horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have unlocked previously inaccessible resources, allowing for efficient and environmentally responsible development.
  • Offshore: Offshore oil and gas development is a key part of America’s energy leadership, accounting for approximately 14% of total U.S. crude oil production, or nearly 2 million barrels of oil per day. The Gulf of America is the nation’s primary source of offshore production and supplies some of the lowest carbon-intensive barrels produced anywhere in the world. Offshore development generates billions in federal and state revenue and contributes significant funding for conservation efforts, including the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

To sustain America’s energy leadership, federal policies must keep pace with the nation’s energy potential. That means regular, predictable lease sales on federal lands and waters, efficient permitting, and a regulatory framework that encourages continued investment.

API advocates for policies that ensure access across major producing regions—onshore, offshore, and Alaska—so the U.S. can continue to lead in delivering secure, affordable, and reliable energy while advancing environmental performance.
