WASHINGTON, March 24, 2022 – The American Petroleum Institute (API) has awarded its Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement – its highest honor and leadership recognition – to Gary R. Heminger, former chairman and CEO of Marathon Petroleum Corporation, a leading integrated downstream energy company that operates the nation’s largest refining system.

“We are proud to recognize Gary for the passion, vision and exemplary leadership that he brought to America’s energy industry to Marathon Petroleum's rapid rise to become the largest refining system in the country,” API President and CEO Mike Sommers said. “Gary has epitomized strong and steadfast leadership throughout his career, whether it’s his steady hand in keeping fuel flowing during hurricanes, his focus on raising the bar for operational safety and efficiency or his dedication to the communities and industries that rely on reliable fuels every day.”

Heminger demonstrated exemplary leadership at every level of the Marathon Petroleum Corporation throughout 45 years of service – from serving in finance, marketing and business development roles to chairman and chief executive officer. Under his leadership, Marathon Petroleum’s midstream assets, refining portfolio and retail operations expanded nationwide. He served on the Boards of Directors and Executive Committees of the American Petroleum Institute and American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers.

Heminger’s legacy of service extends beyond the natural gas and oil industry to educating future generations of leaders. His work as chair of the Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University, member of the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies and past chairman of the Board of Trustees of Tiffin University has made him a pillar of the community and helped support future innovators and problem solvers.

API’s Gold Medal was first awarded in 1946 when API honored Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company. The award recognizes exceptional leadership and service to the natural gas and oil industry, the communities in which the industry operates and the broader nation.

API represents all segments of America’s natural gas and oil industry, which supports more than 11 million U.S. jobs and is backed by a growing grassroots movement of millions of Americans. Our nearly 600 members produce, process and distribute the majority of the nation’s energy, and participate in API Energy Excellence®, which is accelerating environmental and safety progress by fostering new technologies and transparent reporting. API was formed in 1919 as a standards-setting organization and has developed more than 700 standards to enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency and sustainability.
