API Statement on Tariffs on Canada and Mexico

WASHINGTON, March 4, 2025 — The American Petroleum Institute issued the following statement from President and CEO Mike Sommers on the Trump administration’s implementation of tariffs on U.S. imports from Canada and Mexico.
“President Trump has moved swiftly to advance an energy dominance agenda. API welcomes the President’s recognition of integrated North American energy markets. We will continue to work with the administration on trade policies that unleash our nation’s vast oil and natural gas resources.”

Our approximately 600 members produce, process and distribute the majority of the nation’s energy, and participate in API Energy Excellence®, which is accelerating environmental and safety progress by fostering new technologies and transparent reporting. API was formed in 1919 as a standards-setting organization and has developed more than 800 standards to enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency and sustainability.
