WASHINGTON, May 1, 2025 – American Petroleum Institute (API) President and CEO Mike Sommers and American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) President and CEO Chet Thompson today issued the following statement on today’s passage in the House of Representatives of a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution aimed at overturning the U.S. EPA waiver authorizing California’s Advanced Clean Cars II ban on sales of new gas, diesel and traditional hybrid vehicles:
“Today’s vote was a huge win for U.S. consumers. We are one step closer to restoring consumers’ ability to choose the cars that best meet their needs. California’s unlawful ban should never have been authorized, and Governor Newsom should never have been allowed to seize this much control over the American vehicle market. We thank Speaker Johnson, Dr. Joyce and the Republican and Democratic members of the House who voted today to overturn California’s ban on sales of new gas cars.
“We urge the Senate to act swiftly to approve their CRA resolution and get the final measure to President Trump for his signature, allowing him to deliver on his day 1 promise to end EV mandates in the United States. Consumers of all political stripes oppose gas car bans, EV mandates and allowing California to dictate transportation policy for the rest of the country.”
