WASHINGTON, June 6, 2025 — American Petroleum Institute (API) President and CEO Mike Sommers issued the below statement following the Department of Transportation's final rule declaring the Biden-era Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards exceeded the department's authority:
“We applaud Secretary Duffy for taking this important step to protect consumer choice. The previous administration’s rules effectively banned new gas-powered cars and trucks—overstepping their authority and facing clear pushback from voters. Every American should have the freedom to choose the vehicle that works best for them, and we will continue working with the administration on this critical pillar of an energy dominance agenda."
API represents all segments of America’s natural gas and oil industry, which supports nearly 11 million U.S. jobs and is backed by a growing grassroots movement of millions of Americans.
