Paul G. Afonso
Paul G. Afonso serves as senior vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary of the American Petroleum Institute, where he leads the organization’s legal and appellate strategy at the municipal, state and federal levels and oversees API’s legal operations. As a member of the executive team, he also participates in the development of API’s overall policy and strategy.
Afonso has significant experience in both the private and public sectors. Prior to joining API, he served as a partner at Brown Rudnick LLP in Boston, MA where he co-led the firm’s energy and government law and strategy practices. Afonso has more than 25 years of energy, legislative and regulatory experience, having held numerous positions in state and city government and private practice. Previously, he served as Chairman and General Counsel of the Massachusetts Public Utilities Commission, Chairman of the Energy Facilities Board, President of the New England Conference of Public Utility Commissioners, and Chairman of the Boston Water and Sewer Commission. He is active in Portuguese-American civic affairs and speaks fluent Portuguese.
Afonso is a graduate of the Boston College Carroll School of Management and the Georgetown University Law Center. He was born in the Azores, Portugal and grew up in Rhode Island. He lives in Washington, D.C. and Boston, MA with his wife Mary Lou and daughters Caroline and Bridgette.
