BP has just issued a news release outlining its operational response to the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. In addition to working with Transocean to use ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) to assess the well and the blow out preventer on the seafloor, BP has initiated a plan to immediately drill a relief well using a nearby drilling rig.
BP also reports that it has mobilized a "flotilla" of vessels and resources to manage oil in the water. "We are determined to do everything in our power to contain this oil spill and resolve the situation as rapidly, safely and effectively as possible," said Group Chief Executive Tony Hayward. "There should be no doubt of our resolve to limit the escape of oil and protect the marine and coastal environments from its effects."
BP also reports that the U.S. Coast Guard has approved its response plan and the use of oil dispersants. The full text of the news release is available here.
