WASHINGTON, D.C., June 12, 2017 – API today applauded action by the U.S. House of Representatives to approve legislation that would promote a 21st century energy and manufacturing workforce.

“A skilled, highly-trained energy workforce is essential to continuing the U.S. energy renaissance that has made our nation the world’s top producer and refiner of natural gas and oil and global leader in reducing carbon emissions,” said API Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer Marty Durbin. “It’s estimated that by 2035 nearly 1 million jobs in the energy industry could be filled by African-Americans, Hispanics and women – paying wages nearly double the national average.

“This important bill promotes the education and workforce training needed to ensure that underrepresented communities can secure a growing number of new opportunities in the energy sector. We applaud the House’s action today and urge the Senate to promptly send this bill to the president for approval.”

API is the only national trade association representing all facets of the oil and natural gas industry, which supports 9.8 million U.S. jobs and 8 percent of the U.S. economy. API’s more than 625 members include large integrated companies, as well as exploration and production, refining, marketing, pipeline, and marine businesses, and service and supply firms. They provide most of the nation’s energy and are backed by a growing grassroots movement of more than 40 million Americans.
