API Releases New Edition of Critical Oilfield Equipment Standard

The American Petroleum Institute (API) is pleased to announce the publication of the 11th edition of API Standard 5CT, Casing and Tubing. As the foundational specification for the manufacture of steel casing and tubing used in oil and gas drilling and production operations, this edition marks a significant advancement in safety, environmental protection and operational integrity within the petroleum industry.

Evolving with Industry Needs

Continuing the legacy of API’s first standard for oilfield equipment published in the 1920s, the 11th edition of API 5CT introduces significant updates and enhancements. This edition sets forth technical requirements for steel pipes, including casing, tubing and pup joints, as well as for coupling stock, coupling material and accessory material. Additionally, it details guidelines for pipe sizes, masses, wall thicknesses, material grades and end-finishes, fostering compatibility and performance under varied operating conditions.

These updates address the industry’s technological advancements and ongoing commitment to meet evolving industry needs. Key enhancements include:

  • streamlining of product specification levels (PSLs) to better align with current market preferences;
  • adoption of advanced automated inspection techniques for enhanced efficiency and flaw detection;
  • introduction of a new grade, L80 3Cr, which is specifically designed for mildly corrosive downhole environments;
  • simplification of Charpy impact absorbed energy provisions for thick-walled pipes;
  • comprehensive updates for the calibration, use and validation of automated pipe straightness measurement systems;
  • enhanced thread protector quality, promoting greater adaptability and protection during critical phases of transport.

Global Alignment with Sustainable Development

The enhancements in the 11th edition of API 5CT are crucial in reinforcing the role of casing and tubing as primary and secondary barriers, which maintain the integrity of the wellbore and enclose hydrocarbons and other fluids within the intended flow path during well construction and well production operations. By ensuring the consistency and quality of key products, the standard directly contributes to operational integrity and environmental protection.

In furtherance of the industry’s commitment to deliver clean energy products in a reliable and sustainable manner, the changes in API 5CT, 11th edition, align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 7 ( Affordable and Clean Energy). The improved standards for casing and tubing play a vital role in enhancing environmental protection by ensuring that hydrocarbons are securely contained within the pipes.

Manufacturers can obtain an API Monogram® license for the production of casing and tubing in accordance with API 5CT, 11th edition. For information and more details on the revised standard, visit www.apiwebstore.org.
