Updated API Standard for Pipeline Public Awareness Programs Enhances Public Safety
The American Petroleum Institute (API) in August released an updated standard for pipeline public awareness programs, which help protect buried utilities, local communities and the people who live and work near pipeline rights of way.
New API Guidance Boosts Species and Habitat Conservation
The natural gas and oil industry is committed to implementing good practices to further enhance species and habitat conservation while continuing to provide the reliable energy that consumers demand.
As an illustration of that commitment, API has developed new conservation guidance that builds on existing initiatives and practices as part of the industry’s continuous effort to improve operations and reduce its environmental footprint.

API has published API Bulletin 16H, Automated Safety Instrumented Systems for Onshore Blowout Preventer Actuation, 1st edition. This first-edition document provides recommendations for the equipment, interfaces and management of the automated safety systems and alarms for blowout preventers.
API Bulletin 4565, Species and Habitat Conservation: Industry Fundamentals
API has published API Bulletin 4565, Species and Habitat Conservation: Industry Fundamentals. This first-edition document is focused on species and habitat conservation for onshore natural gas and oil production facilities. The document will help boost the industry’s existing practices to enhance environmental performance.
New API Integrity Management Standards for Offshore Oil and Natural Gas Production
The Integrity Management (IM) standards can help ensure the continued reliable and efficient operation of offshore production platforms, including facilities designed to produce oil and natural gas and export liquefied natural gas (LNG).
These new recommended practices (RP 2MIM, RP 2RIM, and RP 2FSIM) add to API’s suite of existing IM standards, which address the critical need of adopting a systems level approach when developing and operating offshore facilities.
API Standards: International Usage and Deployment
The API Standards: International Usage and Deployment report demonstrates the role industry standards play in the development and spread of technologies and products used around the world to enhance environmental, health, safety, and sustainability. The report analyzes how 17 economies in energy producing regions use API’s technical standards as the basis for government regulations and safety programs. The report is focused broadly on the use of API standards across all segments — not only in national laws and regulations but also in policy guidance, national standards, technical manuals, and industry practice.
API Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards (MPMS) 14.10, 2nd Edition
API has published it's 75th standard of 2021 - API Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards (MPMS) 14.10 2nd edition, Natural Gas Fluids Measurement - Measurement of Flow to Flares. The standard addressess measurement of flow to flares and includes application and installation considerations, calibration, operation, calculations and more.

API MPMS Chapter 8.6, Refrigerated Light Hydrocarbon Fluids—Sampling of Liquified Natural Gas—Continuous and Intermittent Methods, outlines good procedural steps required to accurately measure Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) and convey this information along the supply chain.
API MPMS Standards on Gasoline-ethanol Blends
For more than 15 years, from blending to shipping, API has developed technical references for manufacturers, refiners and retailers of fuel-grade ethanol and gasoline blends, to promote consistency and quality of the product. An underlying goal of all API standards development is to enhance the safety of industry operations by assuring quality, consistency, interoperability and reliability across the globe. In this ongoing effort for safety and sustainability API has now published 4 advanced standards on gasoline-ethanol blends, and these new and updated standards are an example of this important work.
API Publishes First-Edition Document Enhancing Safety of Onshore Drilling and Production
The American Petroleum Institute (API) published an important first-edition document focused on improving the safety of onshore drilling and production operations. API Bulletin 16H, Automated Safety Instrumented Systems for Onshore Blowout Preventer Actuation, is the first upstream document that provides information on existing and emerging technologies to bring a well to a safe state if other operational barriers fail.
